The essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride. Unchastity, greed, drunkenness and all that, are mere flea-bites in comparison: it was through Pride that the devil became the devil. Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind.
If any one would like to acquire humility, I can, I think, tell him the first step. The first step is to realize that one is proud …. If you think you’re not conceited, it means you are very conceited indeed.

Hi mr jutta

Wrong, It’s the complete anti-religion state of mind.
Pride was designated a sin because it interfered with the peasants subservience to the church, preventing them from seeing that there is a little bit of god within us all. It meant that religion transcends God. BS
another word for pride is self worth.
For me pride and self-worth is not the same. Self-worth is knowing that you are made in God’s image or what you call “a little bit of god within us” but pride is thinking I can do a better job than god.
that’s a religious spin, made to keep the peasants servile. how can someone have a “little bit of god within” without being proud? I am, aren’t you. Pride is noble, it impels us to uphold the responsibility of being host to that little bit of god.
For me this has nothing to do with peasants but all with our attitude toward God. At least in this context – in relationship to God. Being proud of an achievement or of one’s child etc can be a healthy pride, but it can also lead to an arrogant or presumptuous sort of pride that lacks being realistic aka humility. Maybe you can call the thankfulness of being in God’s image pride, as long as it is coupled with the knowledge that it is a gift from God. This balanced attitude, I would call humility because it means knowing my place and not trying to be like God.
